Kilbirnie Scotland – An All New ‘Loving Blue in Red ‘States” Short Story

The Night Dusty Played

I’ve been Facebook friends with Kitty McIntosh for a few years now. We’ve ‘talked’ many times via messenger and email. We only talked face to face for the first time on Wednesday. We had to you see, because she did something amazing. She wrote a story for inclusion into the ‘Loving Blue in Red States’ short story series I started in 2017. ‘States’ is a bit of a stretch in this case… Her story is set in Kilbirnie Scotland.

That’s right. Scotland!

Kitty grew up in the Kilbirnie area. She now makes her home in another part of Scotland, but stories of Kilbirnie, its famous Walker Hall, music hall, and one of its most famous traveling artist visitors have stuck with her over the years. She tells me people there still talk about when Dusty Springfield came to town.

I hope you’ll give this short story a read. It’s excellent!

LBRS KIlbirnie Scotland CoverSmall-town Scotland in the sixties is not the place to love another woman – especially one of a different religion.

It’s 1964 and Patty’s life revolves around Saturday nights and the big-name acts that come to play in her small Scottish town. Anything to keep her mind off her day job working in the local mill making fishing nets. She’s yet to find love, however hard she tries to find the local fellas attractive.  Meeting a woman at one of the concerts makes her realise she’s been looking in all the wrong places.

Frankie’s a bit of a tomboy. She works hard by day and follows her local football team at the weekends. Sometimes she finds time for the gigs in nearby Kilbirnie, especially when the chart-topping bands are due to play. Her mother assures her she’ll find ‘the one’ and settle down, but Frankie knows that won’t happen – and why – until one night she meets a woman who takes her breath away.

Will they be able to be together in a society where the rules are supposed to be obeyed, and a woman loving another woman – a Protestant one at that – means breaking them all?

This short story is available exclusively at Amazon and free to read via Kindle Unlimited. This is a universal link that will take you to your home country Amazon site.
